World Cleanup day was a success!

Last Saturday the 17th we saw the AISM and US Embassy community join the rest of the Maputo community in various cleanup efforts all over town and the marginal. We had great turnout in our group; students, parents, teachers, staff, children and even grandparents joined us at 9 am at the Miramar beach. Our group did an awesome job as we did our part in being stewards in our environment and demonstrating the values that we pride ourselves in. 

At the end of the cleanup some of us had some lovely coconut juice as a reward!

The municipality came around quite quickly so we barely got to take photos of all the bags we gathered, but here are some images from the day.

 

                                                    

Mozambeach Cleanup was a success!

 

This past Sunday a group of AISM students organised a beach cleanup named Mozambeach Cleanup. (LOVE the name!)

This initiative was organised by 3 students, however some grade 12's joined in as part of their CAS projects.

We met at the parking lot next to the Fish market at 9h. The students gave us gloves and bags and off we went.

It was a lovely day to go out and bask in the sun as we picked up the trash. The stretch of beach we were on next to the Fish market, isn't big at all but unfortunately it was littered enough to keep all 10 of us pretty busy for the hour and a half we were there.

Most littered items? Beer bottles, broken bottles, plastic bottle caps, masks, nappies and oddly enough, pieces of clothing, loads of them!

All in all, we didn't clean the whole beach of course but some trash was removed from the environment, which already makes a huge difference. I also believe it's important that people see the beaches being cleaned up by students, they were being an example and that makes me very proud of the AISM learners! Well done!

                                    

                                                

World Cleanup day is celebrated on 17 September this year. The Sustainability Committee will be organising cleanups too so please keep an eye for those.

AISM Celebrates World Environment and World Oceans day

An Introductory Message From AISM's Sustainability Committee

Dear AISM Community,

We are excited to announce that AISM has launched its SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE!

The Committee consists of a group of students, teachers and administrative staff who have taken up the commitment of helping AISM become more sustainable by implementing practices in all areas that are more conducive to contributing towards a greener school and consequently contributing towards improving the impact we all have on the environment. 

We launched the committee, in honour of Earth day on April 22nd, with a recycling initiative. We have formed a partnership with a local recycling company called Recolixo and rolled out the initiative by getting the learners involved as Agents of Change, placing recycling and non-recycling stickers on all bins on campus and produced a charming informational student video with guidance on what goes in the recycling and non-recycling bins.

The committee is also collaborating with the Secondary School Students Environmental Committee with their composting initiative on campus as well as with their Community Machamba project.

The AISM IT department has initiated a multi-function "follow me" printer initiative that will make AISM’s printing, cartridge and paper usage, more sustainable.  

The committee has a plethora of different projects, ideas and events we intend on implementing as we head towards fulfilling our mission. So many fabulous changes!

This term we will continue the work initiated on AISM’s Environmental Policy and get parents involved with a “Wish List” initiative, so please stay tuned for future events like World Environment Day (05 June) and World Oceans Day (08 June).
